How Civil War makes Age of Ultron a Better Movie

Captain America: Civil War (CW) performed well at box office and pleased fans and critics alike. It actually put the latest Big Event Marvel Movie, Avengers: Age of Ultron (AOU) to shame… but one thing you might not have noticed is that CW actually makes AOU a better movie. Granted this would mean watching films over again and out of chronological order, but as a Marvel fan that was probably going to happen anyway, wasn’t it?

The major conflict in CW is between Iron Man and Captain America, the breakdown of their relation provided an emotional core to the film (“He’s my friend…”) but seeing this play out adds context to the events of Age Of Ultron. Civil War also puts more weight into these friends’ feelings, as overall I think it handles characterisation much better. If you take all this with you when you watch AOU  again, you start to notice the bond between Cap and Tony more and you dread what’s coming. It also means that anytime in the film that they disagree you get a flash of that future as AOU borrows the emotion of CW.

People had problems with Black Widow in AOU, big problems. Personally, I felt I understood her and how she would have at least believed she had feelings for Banner… I did think we had moved past damsels in distress though. In CW, Natasha seems to to be back on form and she has a clear bond with both teams, illustrated by callbacks to her appearances in Iron Man 2, Captain America: Winter Soldier and Avengers. This bond allows her to see the argument from both sides and apart from Tony she’s the only sign that Iron Man’s team has a conscience/doubt about what they are doing. Bearing this in mind AOU becomes a transformative phase for Black Widow as she struggles with the monstrous things she has done in the past and looks for a reason to fight going forward. I could even go as far as to say her relationship with Banner was just a reflection of, or a metaphor for, how she sees herself, the Hulk leaving at the end of Age of Ultron becomes a new start for Nat.

Civil War lends a personal cost to the events in Sokovia, the fact that it in part prompted the accords shows how serious the situation was… yet there didn’t seem much time spent on this in AOU, you kind of assume that everyone survived and an already, mostly ruined down town disappears off the map but the world is saved, so no problem… seeing the future lets you see it in an all new light. It would have been a powerful moment to see the Avengers fail at saving even one person, the events of Civil War try to make up for this.

Having an extra film -full of content means we get to see more of the characters, naturally, but CW is also filled with little in-character touches (like the ones we saw in Avengers) and I wish we’d seen more in AOU. An extra two and a half hours of time with our heroes does mean we know them better and care for them more than we did before Age of Ultron, taking that with us means we see more rounded and familiar characters in the film (AOU) than we did the first time. On a similar note, these little touches also add to our picture of the team dynamic for the previous film.

I’m deducting points for this next one: Even through all the trauma and guilt that Scarlet Witch faced in Civil War, she didn’t seem to be thinking of her brother… it hasn’t been that long and there’s no sign of how she feels about losing him. Maybe she knows something we done and maybe we can pretend he’s still alive based on this “evidence”.

Watching Civil War you get more of a look at Tony Stark's character, and you see some themes that might not have been obvious before. CW highlights Tony's attachment to the team, and how much they mean to him, it's even clearer that he thinks of them as family... all of a sudden the vision of dead Avengers that Stark sees in AOU becomes more powerful and you can see how it could have made him panic and act irrationally.
Civil War also gives us a look at Tony's family, and he admits that he is still trying to cope with their loss, bearing this in mind and looking at other MCU films you can see that Tony has attempted to fill that void by becoming dependent on several different things, always replacing one with something new. In the first Iron Man movie he uses women, until his feelings for Pepper, a near death experience and discovering his weapons are sold to terrorists put things into perspective, then in Iron Man 2 he turns to alcohol rather than facing the problem. Iron Man 3 and things are slipping as he's dealing with his insignificance in the vastness of the universe. He focuses on his suits until he realises that isn't the answer and blows them up, he still calls himself Iron Man, maybe playing hero adds to his self worth and having Pepper seems like enough. Then AOU happens, he's terrified of losing his “family” and blames himself, and no matter what he has to be the one to put things right... this family bond is clearer after viewing CW. After abandoning Pepper to go play hero and nearly causing the end of the world in Age of Ultron, Civil War sees Tony with nothing left, except from that family and now he'll do anything to keep it together, even blindly agreeing to the Sokovia Accords and refusing to recognise that Cap is on a different mission. Once you know how much Stark depends on the Avengers, AOU makes more sense... an already fragile man sees that he is going to cause the end of the one thing that keeps him going... he might try anything to protect it.

There you have it, just like the Avengers themselves the movies are all stronger when they stand together.

Have Your Say: Games as Art

Thanks to some downright beautiful games lately (Valkyria Chronicles, Unravel), I've been thinking about this age old debate.

I'd like to know which games you would consider as art, from photo-realistic vistas to simple stylised graphics, from finely crafted narratives to meticulous level design; what have been your stand out games?

I'm looking for a discussion but to get us started I'm going to put forward the Trine franchise, there's something about the fantastical backgrounds in these games that take me back, it could be the covers of several fantasy novels, or some half forgotten concept art but the style is magical and somehow unreal,

I still find myself lingering in certain areas long after I've completed a puzzle. Plus anything that riffs off of Lost Vikings get's my vote.

Do you have a favourite example?

Leave a comment and the best ones will find their way into the magazine... see your name in print!

Cartoons Are For Kids: East vs West

Think about your favourite anime shows... how many of those would you say were appropriate for kids? or directed at adults? Now do the same but for the more local animations, I say local, anything with a UK/USA/western origin... how do they compare?

I might not have the widest experience of anime but I feel like you're much more likely to find a mature anime than any western animation. I see anime such as Attack on Titan or Steins;Gate and they're full of adult themes, real emotion and developed characters... then I see things such as Family Guy and South Park and... well, you start to get my point (hopefully).

Animation for grown-ups still seems to be difficult for western creators/mainstream audiences, perhaps there's still a perception that "cartoons are for kids". Even these more adult themed series have a certain immaturity and tend to rely on a degree of shock value. I can't even think of any that have a particularly high standard of animation, the art is used to create the controversial rather than the fantastic.

I'm not trashing all animation spawned from western culture, there's plenty of Disney productions that are designed to appeal to both adults and kids, even the American Dads and Bojack Horsemans of this world have their niche and their dedicated/justified fans. I just cant help but think that we are missing an opportunity to create fantastic worlds and far fetched (but believable) stories that wouldn't work in live action, at least not without a massive budget.

On balance I am aware there's plenty of anime that rely on giant boobs or gory action and more than a few that don't reach the mature artistic heights I'm expecting from western studios.

I've admitted I may have a relatively narrow experience compared to some of our readers, so I'm more than happy to accept counter arguments or examples. I'm sure there has to be something out there. Leave a comment and let me know.

The Problem with The Big Bang Theory

The Big Bang Theory (TBBT) stirs mixed feelings in the geek community. Is it beacon of geek culture amongst all the mainstream sitcoms? Or is it a cheap exploitation of an unfair stereotype?

On one hand, the characters in TBBT may be ones that I can identify with but it seems geeks are still still portrayed as weird or pathetic outsiders. Alternatively, TBBT could be a perfect depiction of an imperfect world,  realistic interpretation of flawed humans. Geek or not these characters and the situations they get into could apply to anybody, humans are known to have different hobbies, obsessions, quirks, social anxieties etc. Maybe this show is just one that isn’t afraid to present “adulthood” just how it is, nobody knows what they’re doing and these awkward, dorky archetypes don’t only occur in geekdom. Even trendy people say stupid stuff. The Big Bang Theory has been called the new “Friends”, a long running sitcom that defines a generation, this just happens to be a different group of friends.

For the majority of the series Howard is dependent on his mother and later his wife (who also earns more than he does)… this isn’t because he’s a stereotype of his religion or of his geeky lifestyle… it’s because he’s human, you only need to watch reality TV to see this isn’t exclusively geek. You can apply this to other characters too; Raj’s inability to speak to women, Sheldon’s pedantic superiority. Watch other sitcoms and you’ll probably see the same character traits.

In fact the program might make more sense if you don’t get hung up on the “geek” label, the fact that it is a part of the show and that some jokes may be a little close to home for some viewers do mean that the show will always divide the community. However it is completely possible that the show’s creators don’t have the same lofty interpretation.

One reason I have such a hard time suggesting the show uses damaging stereotypes is that I’ve known these people… I’d have to think back a way (to school or college) but I knew a Sheldon, a Howard, and a Raj... that might have left me being a Leonard but in truth I share something with each of these characters. It’s hard to call them unrealistic or unfair when I grew up with them. The portrayal of Penny is probably the more damaging stereotype, at least in the majority of episodes.

Where I tend to have a problem is how the show handles the geeky hobbies, I haven’t seen one episode that shows cosplay in a positive light, it’s still apparently unbelievable that there are girls in a comic book shop and one episode compares D&D to a night in Vegas and attempts to suggest that D&D is the deviant option when as far as I know it is associated with significantly less organised crime, prostitution and drugs, but maybe I’m doing it wrong.

I generally enjoy the show despite a few other niggles about American comedy having to explain the joke and a tendency to reuse the same material. There are still cringeworthy moments, but for the most part I can look past them, I just don’t think this is something I’ll still be watching in ten years’ time.

Niche Plays: Battleborn Vs Overwatch

This week Mulukh has been sinking some time into the new strategy RPG, Grand Kingdom, keep an eye out for Niche Issue 12 for a full review. So this time Niche Plays has been taken over by Crosshire and his thoughts on Battleborn vs Overwatch. Some colourful language with some colourful words but you can always use your imagination.

Jumping between the two, they are so different. It's a time difference thing, one is rocket league and the other is 3 laps on a race track. Battleborn is an experience of growth and learning as your character gets stronger. Overwatch is fast paced, in and out. You can play like 5 different characters in the time you would play one in Battleborn. I can play Battleborn alone or with friends but I only play Overwatch with friends; it's what everyone is playing.

Overwatch was always going to overshadow Battleborn. It's frakin' Blizzard, they have a fudging World of Warcraft MOVIE currently in the cinema. This year Blizzard are swinging their "credentials" about and getting poop tonnes of muns for it.

But in all fairness, Battleborn has a frelling sweet single player with cool ass loot you can then use in battle, the characters are very stylised in keeping with the developers,Gearbox. I love that stuff. They plan on patching the game and balancing the characters, something Blizzard said they will not be doing with Overwatch. But Blizzard are getting a bad rep for taking down the Overwatch ... (let's say) "fan art"... Haha, if I was Gearbox I'd start producing official Battleborn "fan art".

But yeah, two very different experiences, two very fun games but Overwatch did steal some of Battleborn's thunder. It's a shame but I'm honestly happy to have the option of playing either. Like, you know how long I've been waiting for something with a bit of colour in the FPS format? Like seriously, why did no one pick up the ball after Team Fortress 2? Nope, we went into the CoD generation where every game had to be gritty and bleak.

No Man's Ethics: Geek Island and its Place in the Mainstream

Today would have been the original release date for No Man’s Sky (NMS) in the UK so it’s a good opportunity for me to add my thoughts to the recent controversy. Let me take you back to the news that NMS has been delayed several weeks (August 10th) and the outrageous response from some “fans” over this apparently life destroying news… even going so far as sending death threats to the developers. I’ve seen games delayed before and you do get a few unreasonable "bottom injured" peoples complaining about how unfair it is, but I haven’t seen it on this scale. It has been suggested that maybe the hype surrounding this game has attracted those Not Of the Normal Gaming Element… or Nonges, as I will now call them.

No Man’s Sky is a niche game with mainstream marketing and an unreal level of hype. NMS isn’t designed to be the next Call of Duty or FIFA, I don’t think it was intended to be mass marketed to an audience that could be described as casual or mainstream. No Man’s Sky is being developed by a small indy team experimenting with procedural generation to create sci-fi worlds they had only read about and dreamt of from their childhood, just for people to romp about in and explore, I think there's a certain core of niche gamers that would be happy with that, without the constant demand for “moar gameplayz”.

Could this be a sign of what happens when geek culture becomes mainstream? The famed geek passion but no-longer tempered by an appreciation of the art?  Maybe this is the millennial sense of entitlement I keep hearing about? It's saddening to see this happening to a community I've always known to be supportive of those creating the things we love. I prefer to keep my faith in humanity and think perhaps the rise of the internet and social media just allows a vocal minority to shout even louder.

But then, I have seen other signs of this fusion of cultures having some undesirable side effects, fanboy wars and stories of elitism and body shaming in cosplay. For example, I can’t see why someone with a bought costume should be able to enjoy cosplay any less than those capable of sinking hundreds of hours and a fair bit of money into crafting something and I’ve never felt like cosplay means you MUST exactly replicate an existing character,  These all seem too much like the mainstream marketing concepts that push an unobtainable “perfection”. That is something I hope geek culture can avoid. With its long history of accepting the unique, quirky and outcast the geek community is well placed to resist prejudice and discrimination.

Just like gaming, cosplay is about creating something, and then sharing and enjoying it, both can be counted as an art form and a form of self-expression. It’s completely reasonable for creators to expect to be treated with respect. I’m sure you’d agree that if something or someone doesn’t meet your expectation, that doesn’t somehow make them less than human. If you bought a game and it happened to be buggy and broken or you bought a print from a cosplayer that happened to be poorly printed, perhaps you’d have a right to complain, maybe even claim your money back, but no one would deserve threats and profanity. Those examples actually deal with scenarios where the creator is obliged to fulfil a contract, but waiting for a game to be released or seeing someone enjoying a hobby shouldn't produce that kind of response and definitely shouldn't generate the kind of hatred I've read about.

Is it really "Niche vs The World"? Are these phenomena something you have witnessed? Do you have thought’s on why this kind of thing happens? Or do you disagree with me completely? Comments welcome below!

YouTube: Marvel Thwip! The Big Marvel Show

Anybody here watch the YouTubes? Fan of Marvel comics, movies or games?

There's a new show on the Marvel Entertainment YouTube channel that I've taken a liking to.
Marvel Thwip! is a weekly news entertainment show that covers everything Marvel with a quirky, casual presentation. I'm getting the feeling it was created with s similar "by geeks, for geeks" ethos to our own magazine (albeit funded by Marvel). Some of the humour might seem a little goofy, but you're reading one of my pieces so you might be ok with that plus it adds to the kind of unrehearsed charm. It's a friendly human face to the massive company that Marvel has become.

It could be that I have a thing for redheads and glorious moustaches...(not on the same person) but I'm really enjoying it.

The first episode is embedded below but new episodes appear each Wednesday.

Find you like the show too? Tell 'em Niche: Treat Your Geek sent you, 'nuff said.

News and Views: Skylanders Imaginators Announced

This one's more for the kids and the obsessive collectors... the next instalment in Activision's Skylander franchise has been revealed.
Core gameplay will be familiar but the big feature this year is imagination! Is that cheesy or exciting? The key is you'll be able to create your own character from a whole raft of collectible parts.
There will also be 10 Sensei characters plus 11 former villains to collect, they act as masters to the apprentice "imaginators" that players will create. They look set to unlock some nice extras and each have an assigned element and battle class, such as brawler, knight or bow slinger.

Skylanders games have generally been quality, well polished adventures with plenty of character, I think that despite being a yearly Activision franchise with an added gimmick, those gimmicks actually keep things interesting and handily give you more toys to spend (too much) money on.

I want to like the idea of creating unique characters but I'm pretty sure this is what Lego games have been doing for years with the option to make custom characters..
I'm a little apprehensive this time round, my son's interest is waning and I thought creating virtual characters would be a good time to reduce the number of needed/optional toys. However it seems you need a "creation crystal" to save a character of the same element and you can only store one character on each crystal, already the big draw of this game is massively restricted by accessories and pay walls. Infinite possibilities but you'll need to pay out for each creation you want to save. There's plenty of time for me to be proved wrong, but what do you think? Is this new twist enough to get you interested, or is it a step too far?

News and Views: No Man's Sky Delayed

Rumours have been growing over the last few days, but now it's official. No Man's Sky, the sci-fi galaxy explorer from Hello Games, has been delayed. The UK will now get the game 12th August.

I don't have a problem with developers taking the extra time to make sure we have a polished playable game but given the level of hype there's sure to be disappointment. On the brightside that gives us a few more weeks of glorious British summer before locking ourselves away to explore an entire galaxy.

How do you feel about the delay? Feel free to express yourself in the comments.

News and Views: Lego Avengers Free Character Pack

A little gaming news for my first post here.

Spider-Man is now free to download for Lego Marvel Avengers! To be accurate that's 6 Spider-Men... Spider-Mans... Spider-People? Whether you think this should have been avilable on release or not this pack still feels like a wonderful surprise gift, and having Spider-Man web swinging his way around Manhattan with the Avengers is a glorious reunion similar to the one in Captain America:Civil War.

I know it was already one big Marvel family in the previous game (Lego Marvel Superheroes) but this still feels special. Spidey has some new animations and can now finally wall-crawl up buildings, he also brought some friends. A number of the additional versions come straight out of the actual Web Warriors inspired Lego sets, which is good because we get Miles Morales, Ben Reilly's Scarlet Spider and Iron Spider complete with a few individual skills, but I'm still disapointed with the design of Iron Spider for the toy and in the game. Spider-Girl also makes an appearance although she's no Spider-Woman (I know SW isn't technically a Spidey character but maybe deserved a place in this game).

Anyway, it's a great add-on even before considering it's completely free; highly recommended although it's a slight shame there's no spider-centric story content. Go download it, who are you to stand in the way of bringing this friendly Spider-man back into the neighbourhood?
